Recently, however, many car makers have switched to rotors which are lighter and thinner to decrease weight and save you dollars. Discs used to last through two or a few resurfacings, but don't be surprised if when ever it's time to change the pads you're informed you at the same time need fresh rotors. The current rotors may well not have enough substance in order to be shaved off in resurfacing and may not be exactly as functional as those coming from, say, 5 or more years before. In addition, maintenance shops are unwilling to resurface rotors mainly because it increases valuable time to a project as well as the quality of the work can vary by what person does it and how good they are. Instead, it is a lot faster, less difficult as well as more effective for service shops to just put in brand-new rotors along with brand new pads.
